Wideshot, news conference given my South African government 6. SOUNDBITE: (English) Alec Erwin, South African trade minister "I mean for us, it is critical that the issue of subsidies in agriculture gets addressed. And here, I think, its important to understand some of the differences. All parties in Dohar agreed on the need to remove export subsidies - thats a direct subsidy to an export. The more contentious area is that the practise in the US and the European Union in particular of supporting the income, so various means to support the income of farmers in those economies. And we all argue that is therefore also a support for their ability to export." 7. Cutaway, journalist asking question WSSCC (Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council) - File Nairobi 8. SOUNDBITE: (English) Sir Richard Jolly, Chairman of WSSCC "Why is WASH (name of campaign) the big issue. Six thousand children die a day worldwide, from water-bourne diseases. We tend to think of the answer as water. WASH says the reason is water, of course impure and so forth, but also inadequate sanitation and lack of knowledge of hygiene. WASH says the answer to these six-thousand deaths needs to be action in the whole of the three areas." 11. And to make key decisions about the future of our planet. While Rio, ten years ago, I was privileged to be in Rio ten years ago, I was in office then. And Rio was about policy creation. Johannesburg is meant to focus on delivery; agreeing on ways and means of implementing commitments, on poverty eradication, on environmental protection and on enhanced sustainable development governments." 20. So the leading goal for the upcoming 2012 United Nations Earth Summit is "energy for all" by the year 2030, mostly from renewable and sustainable resources. VOA's Zulima Palacio reports.

Rio+20 (2012) The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD), also known as Rio 2012, Rio+20 (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈʁi.u ˈmajʒ ˈvĩtʃi]), or Earth Summit 2012 was the third international conference on sustainable development aimed at reconciling the economic and environmental goals of the global community. Hosted by Brazil in Rio de Janeiro from 13 to 22 June 2012, Rio+20 was a 20-year follow-up to the 1992 Earth Summit / United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) held in the same city, and the 10th anniversary of the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg. The ten day mega-summit, which culminated in a three-day high-level UN conference, was organized by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs and included participation from 192 UN member states — including 57 Heads of State and 31 Heads of Government, private sector companies, NGOs and other groups. The decision to hold the conference was made by UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/64/236 on 24 December 2009. It was intended to be a high-level conference, including heads of state and government or other representatives and resulting in a focused political document designed to shape global environmental policy. Agenda 21 is a 300-page document divided into 40 chapters that have been grouped into 4 sections: Section I: Social and Economic Dimensions is directed toward combatting poverty, especially in developing countries, changing consumption patterns, promoting health, achieving a more sustainable population, and sustainable settlement in decision making. Section II: Conservation and Management of Resources for Development Includes atmospheric protection, combating deforestation, protecting fragile environments, conservation of biological diversity (biodiversity), control of pollution and the management of biotechnology, and radioactive wastes. Section III: Strengthening the Role of Major Groups includes the roles of children and youth, women, NGOs, local authorities, business and industry, and workers; and strengthening the role of indigenous peoples, their communities, and farmers. Agenda 21 is a product of the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, and it is the means by which Americans may soon be saddled with lower living standards. Agenda 21 is implementing "soft law" through ICLEI, which amounts to bribes and regulations imposed by state and local governments. (21 Jun 2012) STORYLINE Various indigenous tribes of Brazil and other countries marched to the site of the UN Summit for Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday, to protest at the degradation of their environment. Aboriginal people in traditional garb played instruments and sang traditional songs as they marched towards the pavilion where the summit is taking place, in order to deliver a letter of proposals they say will improve the lives of indigenous people throughout the world. "Our goal is to show to the Brazilian government that we have positive proposals to improve, not only the lives of indigenous people, but also of the impoverished populations that we see in urban areas," said indigenous leader Marcos Terena. While more than 100 world leaders were delivering speeches and holding roundtable discussions at the Rio+20 summit to try to forge a path to international development while protecting the environment, activists blasted what they called a tepid effort by the heads of state. Speaking at a news conference being held as a side event to the U.N.summit, Lasse Gustavssoon, executive director of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), said that two years of diplomacy would result in "nothing but more poverty, more conflict and more environmental destruction." The Rio+20 summit is serving as a rally point for activists to put the spotlight on a number of enviromental issues. In a different part of town, UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) representatives brought a giant 150 metre banner to the iconic Copacabana beach for people to write messages to call for governments to take more action to preserve the oceans. "It's about high time that we realise that they hold a lot of the life in the world and that we need to preserve them, if we want to have a better future for the young people who are being born and raised today," said UNESCO Assistant Director-General Eric Falt. The Rio+20 summit comes two decades after the watershed Earth Summit in 1992 put sustainable development on the world's agenda for the first time. This is the VOA Special English Agriculture Report, from http://voaspecialenglish.com | http://facebook.com/voalearningenglish Leaders and officials from governments and nongovernmental groups recently met in Brazil for the Rio+20 Conference. The full name was the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development. It marked the twentieth anniversary of the Earth Summit, the UN Conference on Environment and Development, held in Rio de Janeiro. It also came ten years after the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg. The Rio+20 website described it as a chance to "shape how we can reduce poverty, advance social equity and ensure environmental protection on an ever more crowded planet to get to the future we want." The UN Food and Agriculture Organization prepared a report for the conference called "Towards the Future We Want." It says hunger reduction and sustainable development are highly connected. It calls for better governance of agriculture and food systems. Food systems use thirty percent of the world's energy. Crops and farm animals use seventy percent of the water. Yet food losses and waste are high. The FAO says they add up to more than one billion tons each year, or almost one-third of all the food produced in the world. The FAO says nearly one out of every seven people in the world is a victim of undernourishment. Seventy-five percent of all poor people live in rural areas. Most support themselves through agriculture and relative activities. The agency has estimated that food production needs to increase at least sixty percent by twenty-fifty to feed an expected population of nine billion. The new report calls for doing "more with less" -- improving diets while reducing the effects of agriculture on the environment. Farmers operate five hundred million small farms in developing countries. The report says they need clear rights to resources like land and water. FAO nutritionist Florence Egal says production growth helps not only farmers but also others in related industries. She says people who have no access to land or labor can generate income and add to local economic development through food processing and other activities. She says it would make sense in terms of job creation and in terms of job protection. For VOA Special English, I'm Alex Villarreal.
